Iron Sharpens Iron: A Biblical Reflection on Brotherhood and Purpose

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17 (NIV)
This verse has guided me throughout my journey as a city councillor, coach, father, friend, and follower of Christ. We were never meant to walk this life alone. God designed us to grow in fellowship, to build each other up, to challenge and encourage one another toward our divine calling.
In training, I’ve seen this truth play out physically. A training partner doesn’t just help you lift heavier weights they keep you accountable, motivated, and focused. When your strength fades, they remind you of your potential. The same applies to our spiritual walk.
We all carry burdens. But when we walk in brotherhood and truth, we are refined like iron - stronger, sharper, and more effective for the Kingdom. God uses people to speak into our lives, to lift us when we fall, and to guide us back when we lose our way.
When I stood on the platform to lift at a recent community event, I didn’t just feel the weight of the bar, I felt the presence of my brothers beside me. Just as importantly, I felt the strength that comes from years of being sharpened by others: by mentors, church elders, training partners, and my own children.
So if you’re feeling worn down, stuck, or alone, don’t isolate. Connect. Commit. Serve. Sharpen. Let God place the right people in your life. And be the kind of person who sharpens others too.
We rise stronger together. And in God’s purpose, we never lift alone.
